About
Overview
Flex Design System was born out of a love for consistency, efficiency and professional-looking design documentation.
Built from the ground up
It was built from the ground up, based on UX best practice, many years of industry experience (a.k.a blood, sweet and tears) and takes advantage of Figma’s latest features.
Objective
Flex Design System’s objective isn’t to provide every single component and template variation under the sun, but more of a comprehensive set of tools to enable you to rapidly ‘kick start’ each project.
In addition, Flex Design System’s thoughtful structure and extensible nature ensure that you can easily maintain consistency and quality across your documentation as your project(s) grow.
DS team of one
Flex Design System was developed by UK-based, freelance UX designer, Ben Ellis.
He has created UX component libraries whilst working on client projects, predominantly to maintain consistency, but also to ensure that when the inevitable requests for amendments arrive, that changes can be undertaken in an efficient and (less) painless manner.
Tool agnostic
Ben is tool agnostic and has used a combination of OmniGraffle, Sketch, Zeplin and Zero Height over the years. The transition to Figma was promoted by a client project for Moncler back in 2019, where Figma was a prerequisite.
Fast forward to today and although the tools have changed, the fundamental process and need for having a well-organised and centralised system of components and rules for use on multiple brands and projects is still there.
Did the world need another Figma design system?
Most probably not, but since all previous iterations of Ben’s design system work have remained the intellectual property of the respective clients (Mulberry, Jaguar Land Rover, Moncler, Carolina Herrera and Nokia to name a few), Ben wanted to create something for himself.
So after 100s (if not 1000s) of hours of working evenings and weekends, Ben has finally put together his own design system that he can use (without copyright worries) for any future freelance UX projects.
Flex Design System has thus been released to fellow designers, as a paid product, primarily to be used as a tool, but also as a showcase of best practice and as a learning device for others who wish to use it as a point of reference.
